What this recall means for you

Black Diamond is recalling approximately 43,000 Solution Harness units sold in the United States and Canada after receiving 11 reports of the belay loop stitching unraveling under load during lead climbing scenarios. The belay loop is the reinforced loop at the front of a climbing harness where the belay device and rope attach, and its integrity is the primary load-bearing connection between the climber and the rope system. If the stitching fails during a fall, the climber would be completely detached from the rope, leading to a severe or fatal fall. The failure appears to be caused by a batch of thread with incorrect tension specifications used during manufacturing between February and October 2024, meaning the stitching looks visually identical to a properly manufactured harness but lacks the required load-bearing strength. Climbers who own Solution Harnesses should immediately check the manufacture date on the label inside the waist belt — units made between 02/2024 and 10/2024 are affected and must be removed from service entirely. Do not continue climbing with an affected harness even if it appears visually intact, as the thread failure occurs suddenly and without warning under load.

What to do next

  • Locate the model number on the product label — usually inside the collar, on the waist belt, or on the tent stuff sack tag
  • Confirm your unit is affected by checking the model number and date code against the recall list at CPSC.gov
  • Remove the recalled gear from service immediately and do not use it in any situation where equipment failure could cause injury or death
  • Contact the manufacturer directly using the phone number or website on the recall notice — most recalls offer free repair, replacement, or refund
  • Register your product on the manufacturer recall page to receive notifications and confirm your eligibility for compensation
  • If you purchased the product from a retailer, also keep your receipt as many manufacturers require proof of purchase for refunds on older items
